The scoop on the 'Museum of Ice Cream', opening Friday in Meatpacking District
MEATPACKING DISTRICT, Manhattan (WABC) -- On a hot day, a delicious idea is the air-conditioned 'Museum of Ice Cream'. The pop-up food art exhibit devoted to summer's favorite dessert opens Friday in the Meatpacking District, and tickets are already sold out through its August 31st closing date. However, you can get in the museum for free on opening day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and more tickets may be released via the museum's Instagram.
At the museum, you'll taste ice cream, explore ingredients and explore toppings. It's like a Willy Wonka fantasy, complete with a room that smells, looks and produces chocolate! Room-by-room there are treats, and the 3-foot deep pool of sprinkles is sweet.
"Well, the pool isn't actually made of sprinkles, these are little plastic beads," says Dr. of Food Science Irwin Adam.
Dr. Adam whipped up all of the interactive spots, but you can even come up with a flavor match of your own with an ice cream version of Tinder. You can also ride on an ice cream scooper see-saw.
Co-Creator MaryEllis Bunn says she has always loved dessert, and now her childhood passion is something that has never been done before - where she hopes people bond over the delicious treat.
Her jovial project includes edible sugar balloons filled with helium.
There is also a real flavor trip exhibit. You take a glycoprotein pill, which is basically a sweetness inducer. Then, you try strawberry lemonade ice cream topped with a lemon slice.
Museum creators are hoping visitors will share their experiences on social media with the hashtag #MuseumOfIceCream
Here's what could cause a meltdown - the museum is only open a month, and tickets are sold out. Friday is the only free day, and it is first come, first serve.
