YONKERS, Westchester County (WABC) -- Firefighters rescued six people from a burning apartment building in Yonkers Monday morning.

The four-alarm fire broke out at about 9:45 a.m. at 28 Caryl Avenue, a five-story building.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the building's third floor, which then extended to the upper floors.

Numerous residents self-evacuated, but three adults and three children were led to safety on fire escapes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was especially challenging for firefighters due to the hot weather.

The Red Cross is on the scene, providing assistance for at least 50 people, and a temporary shelter has been set up at the Police Athletic League on North Broadway.
