Pit bull mix rescued from abuse
Tim Fleischer has the story of Jamie, a pit bull mix rescued from an abusive environment.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- If there was ever a dog in need of a good home, it is Jamie and hundreds of other shelter dogs like her.

"Jamie, she is a wonderful dog, she loves everybody," said the ASPCA's senior manager of customer relations, Joey Teixeira.

Jamie, a four-year old pit bull mix, is now starting to enjoy a better life after being rescued by the ASPCA and the NYPD from an abusive environment in Brooklyn.

"Very thin, no food and water, very dirty and poor body condition," said Teixeira. "It is still an active case they are prosecuting for animal cruelty."

NYPD Sgt. Maria Sexton, the animal liason coordinator in patrol borough Manhattan North, works similar animal abuse cases with about 30 other officers.

"She is very typical of the animals my cops come across," said Sexton. "And to see a case like that where cops have helped her, and then to see the end result, which is just an amazing dog."

Who recently spent an amazing day with NYPD officers from 12 precincts who are animal cruelty liasons to the ASPCA.

She went to the 20th precinct, spent some time in Riverside Park in the dog run, got to ride in a police van, got some sweet treats, and even took a quick nap.

"We come across these cases and to see the animals coming and being rehabbed and having happy lives afterwards, we like to see that end result," said Sexton.

The hope is someone will adopt Jamie during what is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. There are many others who were rescued through the ASPCA and the NYPD partnership.

"There are millions of homeless animals across the country so this is a very important month for all shelters," said Teixeira.

And Jamie too is looking for a home to call her own.

"She deserved a happy home. She is like the best dog in the world," said Sexton.

Those interested in adopting Jamie can call (646) 291-4500 for more information or visit our Adoption Center at 424 E. 92nd Street, New York, NY.
