Police shoot man armed with knife in the Bronx
N.J. Burkett reports from the Longwood section of the Bronx.

LONGWOOD, Bronx (WABC) -- NYPD officers shot and injured a man they say was armed with a large kitchen knife in the Bronx.

The police-involved shooting happened inside a three-story building on Intervale Avenue in the Longwood section just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Shemel Jones.

Jones' girlfriend called 911 and said that she was being assaulted.

Police say Jones ran away from them when they arrived and a chase led them to the building on Intervale Avenue.

The man was confronted inside an apartment where the officers tried to diffuse the situation, but were unsuccessful.

They even used their pepper spray, but police say that the man refused to drop the 12-inch knife and charged at them.

The man was shot in the stomach and taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition. He is undergoing surgery.

The woman involved suffered some cuts in the original assault, but she was not seriously hurt.

Police say that there is a civilian who supports their version of events.
