BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) -- The first in what is expected to be a series of arrests in the investigation of the murder of Carey Gabay, an aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo killed last September, was made Thursday in Brooklyn.

Micah Alleyne, 24, was arraigned Friday morning in connection with Gabay's Sept. 7 shooting.

Alleyne was charged with second degree murder, reckless endangerment and weapons possession. He was ordered held without bail.

Police said Alleyne can be seen in surveillance video that captured the shooting. The gunfight broke during a gang-related battle, and Gabay -- an innocent bystander -- was struck in the head.

He was in a coma for a week before he died.

"That bullet stopped physically when it struck Mr. Gabay, but emotionally it traveled and ripped apart our entire community," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. "Today, we start the process of healing."

Gov. Cuomo said he was pleased to hear about the arrest.

"Carey Gabay was an exemplary public servant who lost his life in a senseless tragedy," said Cuomo. "Today's arrest is a major step forward in the pursuit of justice for Carey's family and loved ones. I commend the investigators and prosecutors for their tireless efforts to ensure those responsible for Carey's death are held fully accountable for their actions."

Gabay's family issued a statement Friday, saying "Our family is still grieving Carey's loss but we are encouraged that the justice process is finally moving forward."

More arrests are expected in connection with the shooting during the J'Ouvert celebration, in the hours before the West Indian American Day Parade. Though, investigators said there is strong evidence that the bullet Alleyne fired is the one that killed Gabay.
