D'Esposito defeats Gillen in NY's 4th, completing a GOP sweep
Republican Anthony D'Esposito has defeated Democrat Lauren Gillen in the race for New York's 4th Congressional district.

GARDEN CITY, Nassau County (WABC) -- Republican Anthony D'Esposito has defeated Democrat Lauren Gillen in the race for New York's 4th Congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

D'Esposito's victory completed an election night sweep by Republican candidates of the Long Island congressional districts.

The 4th Congressional district -- which encompasses most of Nassau County's south shore -- had been in Democratic hands for more than two decades.

Gillen was hoping her experience as a moderate Hempstead Town Supervisor would give voters peace of mind.

More Democrats are registered to vote in the county than Republicans, but the GOP was able to ride a wave of discontent.

"One of the things I ask people every day is, 'Are you better now than you were two years ago when Joe Biden took office?' And for most people, the answer is, 'We're not better,'" D'Esposito said.

Other Long Island races being watched on Election Night included:

-District 1 in Suffolk County - Democrat Bridget Fleming vs Republican Nick LaLota, after incumbent Lee Zeldin vacated the seat to run for governor.

-District 3, which was Democrat Tom Suozzi's - Democrat Robert Zimmerman faced off against Republican George Santos. Both candidates are openly gay, but said their similarities ended there.

In the end, both of those seats went for Republicans as well, with LaLota and Santos emerging victorious.
