NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after two officers were stabbed in Newark on Thursday evening.

The incident was reported on the 600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 4:45 p.m.

Authorities say a man stabbed two male police officers who were responding to a domestic dispute at the location.

Both officers were taken to University Hospital for treatment and are in stable condition. They are expected to make a full recovery.

A suspect was arrested at the scene without incident. He has been charged with attempted murder.

A woman who works in the building's security office told Eyewitness News reporter Crystal Cranmore off camera that the suspect is a man who frequently visits his girlfriend.

A security guard who witnessed the dispute called city police to assist.

At some point the altercation grew, with the suspect drawing blood near the front doors.

Staff spent much of the night cleaning the entrance of the Aston Heights residential building as residents waited to return home. The area was blocked off for hours.

The stabbing remains under investigation.
