Off-duty officer critical after being shot during attempted robbery
The officer was attempting to purchase a car over a social media platform when he was shot. Johny Fernandez reports.

EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An off-duty NYPD officer is fighting for his life after being shot during an attempted robbery in Brooklyn, police say.

The shooting took place Saturday at 7 p.m. on Ruby Street near Linden Boulevard in East New York. The officer was attempting to purchase a car when he was shot.

Details of the purchase were arranged on social media. When the officer arrived, the suspect immediately displayed a gun and announced the robbery. The officer then displayed a gun and there was an exchange of gunfire.

The officer was struck by a bullet and was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell says the officer was a 5-year veteran and was assigned to patrol.

The identity of the officer has not yet been released, but Mayor Adams said he spoke to the officer's wife and children.

Police are still searching for the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
